🌍 What Is the Ozone Layer?

🌟 A Protective Shield Around Earth
High up in the sky, about 15–35 km above us, there is a special layer of gas called the ozone layer.
It may be invisible, but it’s like Earth’s sunscreen — protecting us from harmful rays of the Sun. 🌞
🧪 What Is Ozone?
- Ozone is a gas made of three oxygen atoms (O₃).
- Normal oxygen that we breathe has two atoms (O₂).
- Ozone is formed naturally when sunlight breaks oxygen molecules and they join again.
🕶️ Why Is It So Important?
The ozone layer blocks harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the Sun.
Without it:
- People would get more skin cancer & eye problems 😟
- Plants would not grow well 🌱
- Animals, especially in the oceans, would be harmed 🐠
It’s like Earth’s sunglasses! 🕶️
⚠️ The Ozone Hole Problem
Scientists discovered that chemicals called CFCs (used in old fridges, sprays, and air conditioners) were destroying ozone.
This created a hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica.
Good news? 🌍 People around the world worked together and banned many of these harmful chemicals.
Today, the ozone layer is slowly healing. 💚
🌎 Ozone Day
Every year on September 16th, we celebrate World Ozone Day to remind ourselves to protect this shield.
🧠 Fun Facts About Ozone Layer
- Without the ozone layer, Earth would be too dangerous for life.
- One molecule of CFC can destroy thousands of ozone molecules.
- Thanks to global action, the ozone hole is expected to close by 2050–2060.
